Swifts soare through the air. Today they fly lower making their presence more obvious.

They are the most special birds.

Their legs are so short that it is not convenient to stand on them. (The Latin name of the swift, apus apus, literally means ‘without legs’.) Don’t worry, they mostly live in the air. Sleeping, eating, mating…

And then there’s the little beak they use to catch insects, like a vacuum cleaner with the mouth wide open.

But they are finding it increasingly difficult to reproduce. Our renovations reduce the number of breeding grounds for birds. Old nests, which they like to reuse, disappear.

Fortunately, there are swallow nest boxes, because making a new nest requires a lot of energy.

Gierzwaluwen gieren door de lucht. Vandaag vliegen ze lager waardoor hun aanwezigheid duidelijker wordt.

Het zijn de meest bijzondere vogels.

Hun pootjes zijn zo kort dat het niet handig is om erop te staan. Geen nood ze leven grotendeels in de lucht. Slapen, eten, paren,…

En dan is er de kleine snavel waarmee ze insecten vangen. Stofzuigergewijs met de bek wagenwijd open.

Maar zij en ook andere zwaluwen hebben het steeds moeilijker om jongen voort te brengen. Onze renovaties verminderen het aantal broedplaatsen. Oude nesten, die ze graag opnieuw gebruiken, verdwijnen.

Gelukkig bestaan er zwaluwnestkasten, want een nieuw nest maken vraagt veel energie.
