Do my sneakers attract squirrels?

I’m sitting on a terrace surrounded by greenery, not far from the Sonian Forest, and I’m being kept company by a little squirrel (Siberian chipmunk*). It’s darting around me, just centimeters away from my tennis shoes.

This is the second time this has happened to me. (see August 2025) And I love it.
Maybe I should wear the same shoes all the time from now on?!

It’s a beautiful, playful little creature, yet in this moment of happiness, it also makes me feel a bit nostalgic for the red squirrel that used to have a nest near our house. That nest is now gone. Probably disintegrated, or perhaps blown out of the trees?

Still, there’s a glimmer of hope, as I’ve found traces of a possible presence in the garden over the last few weeks. Fingers crossed.

*The colonies of Siberian chipmunks in the Sonian Forest likely originated from the release of former pets. The first sightings date back as far as 1974.

How is this possible? Finding you here—not just once, but twice.
For years, my search for you—in all the places I used to find you: grassy fields, quiet meadows, or open green spaces—stayed unanswered. How I’ve missed you. Gradually you faded into a childhood memory.

But here you are, undisturbed, foraging amidst the tall apartment blocks* by the canal. Hopping across cobblestones**.
Your tail makes that characteristic movement that lets me recognise you from afar.

I am thoroughly savouring your re-discovery.

* White wagtails nest in large buildings, under roof tiles, in ventilation shafts, and in stone walls.
**They love chasing insects on smooth road surfaces. I didn’t know that.

’When I’m outside, drawing in my sketchbook, I feel connected to nature. I react with awe and curiosity, and I become part of the landscape.’
-Sam Marshall-

It is International Nature Journaling Week, and that makes me happy.
It is so wonderful that more and more people are discovering this event and participating fully. And they have been doing so since 2020.

Just like last time, I cannot restrain my wishes for the coming year this time either. Although I know that nature shows me exactly what I need.
She really is my favourite ‘forever teacher’.

That is why I am limiting myself to sharing my two most fervent wishes: one realistic and one somewhat dreamy.

I draw them with great pleasure!

(The more realistic wish: a female Orange Tip. This one looks like a Cabbage White, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a beautiful green-white marbled hindwing. I have already checked many so-called Cabbage Whites for this secret, but not a single one has turned out to be a hidden Orange Tip.

The somewhat more dreamy wish: to encounter a Bee-eater. This species is rare in our country and is usually seen flying overhead. It would therefore be almost a miracle to see one foraging in the area where I am actively keeping this nature journal.)

The quote is from: Sam Marshall, Sketch, Herbert Press, 2026, p.23

Zij is echt mijn favoriete ‘forever teacher’.

I fidget impatiently. I can’t wait until it’s dark.

Yet, today is a beautiful, warm day. But that is precisely the reason for my impatience.

Last night, everything smelled of blossom, even inside the house, because the windows were still open and let in the scent molecules with that lovely fragrance.

So we slipped outside to enjoy the scent of the blossoms. In the dark, as we inhaled the air and heard a soft buzzing. It was cockchafers flying in and out of the hedge. The males love the aroma* emitted by the eaten leaves, because then there are likely females nearby.

Cockchafers orient themselves using moonlight. They have lived underground for 3 to 4 years and now have a maximum of 6 weeks to explore the world above ground. So we respected their way of life (however short) and listened to their cockchafer song in the natural night light.

I have taken this magical moment of overwhelming floral scent and pleasant buzzing into my dreams.
And now I hope so fervently that I may participate in this vibrant concert again tonight.

*The males are sensitive to alcohols released from damaged leaves (such as hexan-1-ol). You can compare this to the scent of ‘fresh green,’ like freshly mown grass, which most of us find very pleasant. However, they know that the females have likely nibbled on those leaves and continue to search for their presence by looking for female pheromones.

The lawn looks soft. We haven’t mowed it a single time. As a result, daisies, dandelions, and forget-me-nots grow among the swaying green blades of grass that seem to be caressed by every gust of wind.

Every flower bows its head in joy when a bee or butterfly visits it. And I drink this moment as nectar of life.

But then my attention is drawn by an orange speck whizzing through the flower meadow. It is an Orange Tip. I know little about it, because I have only seen this butterfly once.

That is why I search in vain for a less brightly coloured female variant. Nature is always surprising, so observing is better than assuming. Because I am completely wrong.

The female has nothing orange at all, as it turns out. She looks more like a Cabbage White on the upper side. But the hindwing, which is marbled green- white, just like the male, does confirm her identity. You might as well call her Mrs. Nothing-Orange-Not-Even-A-Tiny-Chip-Tip.

The streets and squares are brightened by magnolias. Apparently, they symbolize purity, nobility, sincerity, and tranquility.

Such a thought should nourish the serenity within me, but at the sight of them, my inner bees go into overdrive and buzz around merrily.
The sea of flowers heralds an exciting period, for all the blossoms are now breaking out of the branches, from plum trees to cherry trees to shadbushes.

And I am enjoying this immensely.

Spring bloomers, are extraordinarily strong. Their blossoms withstand storms, rain, and hail. This is to help wild bees, and other insects, create a safe future for their nests and eggs thanks to their abundant nectar and pollen.

The mason bee diligently building a tunnel next to our back door is the best proof of this.

Another lovely gift from nature.

Over the past few weeks, I have seen a coal tit in the garden every now and then.

I consider this bird as a bit of a punk among the tits. Small but feisty. Slightly paler in color, as if it has been in a fight. A beautiful white stripe on the head, just like a very punk-like hairstyle. Moreover, he can raise a sort of crest if something displeases him.

It would have been a welcome addition to my personal Great Backyard Bird Count-list, given that its presence has declined significantly.

So I look for him among the blue tits and great tits, which are so numerous that counting them correctly is a challenge in itself. But unfortunately, I cannot make a note of him.

Perhaps it was there when I wasn’t looking, or perhaps he indeed has a rebellious nature and prefers to drop by on less popular days. I would find that truly magnificent.

(I am very satisfied with this year’s counts. And I have once experienced again that with every Great Backyard Bird Count you discover that there were a few ‘hidden birds’ in the garden.)

The sky is Prussian blue.
It’s ‘entre chien et loup’.

I feel everything becoming silent as darkness sets in.
Nearby, a wren sings its last notes of the day. A little further away, a robin adds a few more until a crow sounds the final chord.

The silence is now audible.

Stars appear, the world turns without me realising it, and elsewhere, far away, the sun rises in all its glory.

So grateful for this wondrous life.
